How Storytelling Heals: Finding Belonging & Authenticity with Mary Hoefler

Welcome to Episode 7 of the Connection from Here podcast! In this heartfelt and deeply insightful conversation, host Ashley Perry and guest co-host Rhiana Wiggins are joined by the inspiring storyteller and psychotherapist Mary Hoefler. Together, they explore the transformative power of storytelling, the journey to authentic belonging, and how communities—traditional or chosen—impact who we become. Mary opens up about her immigrant upbringing, the difference between fitting in and true belonging, and how honoring our own stories (even the messy parts!) paves the way to deeper human connection. If you’ve ever felt invisible or out of place—even in a crowd—this episode will remind you that your uniqueness deserves to be seen. Key Takeaways: 🎤 The power of storytelling as a tool for personal healing and building community 🎤 Why authenticity and vulnerability are essential for real connection 🎤 The difference between fitting in and truly belonging, especially in families or cultural groups 🎤 How childhood experiences shape our sense of self-worth and connection 🎤 The importance of chosen family when traditional support systems aren’t enough 🎤 Finding community through creativity and the arts, even later in life 🎤 Tips for giving yourself and others grace as we navigate our own messy, human journeys If you’re searching for meaning, longing for community, or hoping to give yourself a little more grace, this episode is for you. ABOUT MARY HOEFLER: After finding herself on stage during an expanded state of consciousness, Mary Hoefler decided that it was about time to get writing and start talking. She found herself on The Moth stage for the first time in July of 2023 and never looked back. A 2025 Moth Grand Slam winner and a six-time StorySlam winner, Mary has also been showing up at venues all over Chicago to tell her truth. In her stories, she shares with bravery and vulnerability what it is like to feel invisible at her age and her lifelong journey of wanting to be seen and picked. Although storytelling is clearly in her DNA, it doesn’t pay the bills, so Mary spends her days as a psychotherapist, encouraging clients to find their voice, get loud, and share their own stories without any edits…because why edit who we are?!!
